About this project

“Fifteen” is a flagship editorial program that dives into the events and societal impacts surrounding April 15, 2023—a key turning point in Sudan’s history. Drawing on decades of instability following independence in 1956, the 1989 coup by Omar al-Bashir, and more recent power shifts, “Fifteen” illuminates how these layers of unrest culminated in today’s escalating conflict. The project spotlights civilian displacement, youth- and women-led advocacy efforts, and the resilient cultural expressions that have emerged amid war.

By amplifying lesser-known perspectives—local artists, community organizers, and ordinary citizens—“Fifteen” fosters global awareness about Sudan’s challenges and hopes for a more stable, democratic future. Each segment captures the evolving social and political landscape, giving audiences at home and abroad a deeper understanding of Sudan’s struggle for peace and justice. Funded by Internews with a six-month timeframe and a budget of $103,000, “Fifteen” underscores the power of storytelling to connect conflict analysis with real human experiences, ultimately inspiring empathy, collaboration, and forward-looking policy discussions.
